GRAFT was established in 1998 in Los Angeles, California by Lars Krückeberg, Wolfram Putz, and Thomas Willemeit. Further offices followed in Berlin, Germany in 2001 and Beijing, China in 2004.
GRAFT was conceived as a ‘Label’ for Architecture, Urban Planning, Design, Music and the “pursuit of happiness”. From the beginning on GRAFT has been commissioned to design and manage a wide range of projects in multiple disciplines. With the core of the firm’s enterprises gravitating around the field of architecture and the built environment, GRAFT has always maintained an interest in crossing the boundaries between disciplines and “grafting” the creative potentials and methodologies of different realities. This is reflected in the firm’s expansion into the fields of exhibition design and product design, art installations, academic projects and “events” as well as the variety of project locations in Germany, China, UAE, Russia, Georgia, the U.S. and several African countries to name a few.
Spread across continents, multiple disciplines and experience levels GRAFT offers architectural services in all phases from design to planning and construction to practical completion. Our collective professional experience encompasses a wide array of building types including Commercial and Residential, Health Care and Hospitality, Institutional and Educational facilities from XS to XXL dimensions. GRAFT has rigorously undertaken an increasing role in masterplanning, city development and destination building. Within the last years, consultancy assignments for public authorities and trend researches on the architectural praxis of the future expanded our expertise.
With GRAFT Brandlab, a communication and branding agency, we both strengthen existing design and architectural projects with our brand focus on strategy and communication, and we partner with existing brands to evolve their presence in the areas of brand experience, environments and spatial design.
AUTOSTADT ROOF AND SERVICE PAVILION IN WOLFSBURG, GERMANY
GRAFT developed a roof construction that protects the landscape underneath with its organic form. A special static principle allows for the unique structure to be anchored in two points. The structural framework was developed by Schlaich Bergermann Partner. As the roof follows the concept of a leaf, the service pavilion is integrated into the architectural landscape. Covering 15,000 sqm, the new driving attraction was built in ten months’ time.
ROSE SQUARE - URBAN DESIGN IN TBILISI, GEORGIA
Due to its urban setting the Rose Square is is a very unique spot between the Radisson Blu “Hotel Iveria” and Radisson Telegraph and one of the few public places in the city of Tbilisi.
There will be new retail and restaurant areas and so called sunken gardens. An underground pedestrian path connects the hotel with the Boulevard Rustaveli. The design reflects the distinct features of the capitals terraced topography and reanimates so far unused potentials of a variating urban landscapes.
CHARLIE LIVING - RESIDENTIAL QUARTER IN BERLIN, GERMANY
Charlie Living is the first block of a new ensemble of buildings that will repair many of the gaps around Checkpoint Charlie on the Friedrichstrasse in central Berlin.
This block with 241 flats and 48 serviced apartments takes a different approach to conventional courtyards and creates a public green space in the centre that branches off the public urban areas as the focus for all four of the surrounding buildings.
Solarkiosk is a highly optimized kiosk with solar panels on top. Once installed, it becomes a compact, affordable and sturdy shop offering energy, products, tools and services.
