Gerber Architekten is a German architecture office with national and international projects in the fields of architecture, interior design, urban design and landscape design. With 50 years of experience, we offer a wealth of expertise, competence and excellence. Setting standards and optimizing tradition through innovation and sustainability, our team is committed to the creation of architecture that is legible, functional and sensitive to the community it serves. We look at the community's culture for inspiration ‒ seeking architecture that forms a meaningful connection to its place. Our approach is to develop the site with an integrated solution that meets the client’s requirements for design, local needs, engineering and economical return. Gerber Architekten stands for high-quality architecture with a strong focus placed on sustainability. Traditional construction methods are combined with intelligent technology ‒ energy issues are one part in the complex chain of architectural design.
Probably, over 3 billion people working in offices around the globe, employed in a vast array of occupation and working in a wide variety and standard of accommodation. We understand their needs and integrate architecture, structural and service design to provide superior commercial buildings that are designed with sustainable awareness and have low costs of maintenance.
Hospitality and Exhibition
Wherever people congregate – in hotels, museums or at trade fairs - a dignified and welcoming entrance lobby, an exciting and clearly structured sequence of spaces, a stimulating use of lighting and views to the landscape or cityscape outside all help the visitor to find their way about and to feel welcome. In addition, our design concepts follow the maxims of Functionality, Flexibility and Orientation.
As communities grow, new approaches are needed to prove safe, attractive, harmonious and sustainable environments that nurture a common sense of belonging.
Hotel complex, Parking Garage, and Bus terminal at Leipzig Main Station, Germany
Two timelessly elegant new hotels, the Ramada and the H2, plus a car park building and a bus terminal, adjoin the east side of the listed Leipzig main station, fitting in and giving the locality an imposing ensemble of buildings that creates a sense of identity. The hotels are two independently functioning architectural sections, uniting at their intersection to create a striking architectural structure. The hotel complex and the parking building are united by a “promenade plaza”.
Quarter of Nations, Hamburg, Germany
The ‘Quarter of Nations‘ was created within the IBA 2013 – a model intercultural housing project for more than 1,700 inhabitants from 30 nations. Two new buildings are extending a traditional workers’ housing by reinterpret the existing architecture by incorporating sculptural volumes, whilst reconciling them with the high energy efficiency requirements of a passive house. A total of 75 units of different sizes were built ‒ an appropriately-mixed social profile for the ‘Quarter of Nations‘.
Port-Towers in the Dortmund Docklands, Germany
Two new towers of different heights are to be built in the Dortmund docklands, directly on the Dortmund-Ems canal. With a combined gross floor area of 52,000 sq m, the 21 and 11 storey “Port-Towers“ overlook the canal, allowing views of the busy waterway. Both the form of the buildings, resembling the prow of a boat, and the gently rolling green roof of the adjoining multi-storey car park pay tribute to the maritime heritage of the docks.
In 1966, Eckhard Gerber laid the foundation for Gerber Architekten with the setting up of a two-man architectural office. Today, 50 years later, the office has more than 170 employees in five locations and can look back on a huge variety of national and international projects and also forward - to challenging and impressive projects in the future. An exhibition at the Aedes Architekturforum in Berlin in December 2016 and January 2017 showed the wide range of projects developed over the last five decades.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of our office, the book "Eckhard Gerber Baukunst 2- Gerber Architekten Projects and Buildings“, edited by Frank R. Werner, will be published by Jovis.
